How long does kitchen fitting take? Plan the whole job

Cabinet fitting is only one stage. Understand the sequence, the decisions that affect timing, and what to ask before agreeing a kitchen installation date.

Fitted grey kitchen with roof lights and a timber island worktop

A kitchen installation timeline depends on the preparation, the fitting scope, product availability and the order of the trades. Ask for a schedule for your room, including the point when you can use the sink and appliances again. The number of days spent fitting cabinets is not the same as the time without a working kitchen.

Matthew 633 discusses expected timings as part of a quotation. A refurbishment with damaged walls or a new floor needs a different plan from a straightforward cabinet replacement.

Before the first fitting day

Several things need to line up before an installer arrives. The plan must be agreed, the room assessed, the necessary products available and the responsibilities clear. If any of those are still uncertain, ask what that means for the proposed start date.

Check the delivery arrangements with the supplier and the fitter. Allow for inspecting the order and raising any problems through the supplier’s current process. Ask who will do this and where the delivery will be stored.

If building work is happening before the kitchen, tell Dan what is still outstanding. A booked cabinet delivery does not confirm that a floor, wall or service is ready for installation.

The usual order of work

The precise sequence varies, but this is a useful way to discuss the job:

  1. Confirm the scope and dates. Share the final plan, agree the quotation and identify who arranges each trade.
  2. Remove and prepare. Deal with the old kitchen and complete the agreed preparation. The room may reveal issues that were hidden behind units.
  3. Fit the cabinets. Position and install the units, with the checks required for the chosen worktop and appliances.
  4. Complete the worktop and connections. Coordinate any specialist worktop appointment and the relevant trades.
  5. Finish and check. Complete the agreed panels, handles, adjustments and finishing work, then walk through any remaining items.

This is a planning sequence, not a fixed day-by-day promise. Your quotation and the agreed installation plan should describe your own project.

Why can quartz worktops create a gap?

A worktop supplier may need to template the kitchen after the base cabinets are installed. Manufacture and a later fitting appointment can then sit between cabinet installation and completion. Check the exact requirements and lead time with your chosen supplier.

Howdens’ template-and-fit guidance illustrates why the state of the kitchen at the template visit matters. Other suppliers may have different arrangements. Ask what must be ready and what can be used while you wait.

Read our quartz templating guide before agreeing a date for the sink or final appliance connections.

What tends to change the schedule?

Missing items, a revised layout, hidden damage and unfinished preparation can all affect the sequence. The practical question is what depends on the delayed task. A small missing trim may be different from a missing cabinet needed to support a worktop.

Ask how the fitter will explain a change, what work can continue and whether another visit is needed. Do not treat a customer review describing one quick installation as a timescale for every kitchen. Rooms and scopes differ.

Keep decisions moving too. If someone needs your approval for a change, agree how they should contact you while work is underway.

How do you plan life without the kitchen?

Ask when you will lose and regain access to water, refrigeration and cooking facilities. Make a simple plan for meals, washing up and the items you use every day. Keep children and pets away from the work area, and agree access arrangements with the team.

Tell the fitter if you have a fixed event, move-in date or another important constraint. Raise it before booking rather than hoping the schedule will fit around it.
